Dental biofilm was accidentally discovered by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in 1683. Dental biofilm consists of numerous microorganisms surrounded by a glycoprotein matrix, which allows them to adhesion, growth and development on the surface of the teeth. Biofilm contains microorganisms causative agents of caries, periodontitis and other oral diseases. The greatest amount of biofilm is found in retention areas such as fissures on occlusal and apximal teeth surfaces, below the contact point and gingival sulcus.
